Montreal Public Markets consist of 15 locations where you can experience fresh local ingredients, establishing a network of locally sourced food. The mandate for this packaging was to increase interest in local products that are sold in the Montreal Public Markets.

Montreal’s Public Markets is concerned about its environmental impact and conforms to a sustainable development policy. They want to grow their own food using local seeds, decrease waste by using less packaging, and produce food with a higher nutritional density.

Process

Montrealers are now connected to local farmers and their produce, I wanted to create packaging for the spices series that reflect the values of the local markets. Due to the fact the spices are made with local seeds of sage, I wanted the material to be manufactured with eco-friendly packaging which reflects the environmentally conscious consumers.

To express interesting and eco-friendly packaging while maintaining simplicity, I came up with a box-shaped design using paper, which is the most basic packaging design. In order not to make the design too boring, I used two colors that show good contrast with colors of spices. To open the package, I created a cutting line on the side of the box with the opening instructions. I wanted to make one cohesive box that you could be held easily while cooking, while creating a simple label that’s remains appealing and practical. To achieve this, I used a bold sans serif font to simply express the names of the spices.

Outcome

I tried to maintaining simplicity in the design that reflect the fresh and local food that lacks preservatives. It is very nice that I came out with a simple, colorful, and well-expressed design that indicates the feeling of the local market, away from the luxurious and modern packaging of spices in many stores
