The photography of Maria Lai's book cover.

This project is designing a book for Maria Lai. She was an Italian artist who is known for her multimedia artworks that explore the craft traditions and folklore of her native island, Sardinia. To Maria Lai, thread and twine symbolize the coming together of elements, the establishing of connections. They convey notions of bond and relationship, and, importantly, a link with the past. She translates the love of poem and stories into artworks that act as illegible scriptures.

Maria Lai draws upon the rich histories, folktales, and craft traditions of Sardinia as well as poetry and literature to create multimedia works that speak to time-honored customs and communal relationships on the Italian island.

Process

Most of her pieces uses stings that symbolize poems, word rhythms, origins, traditions, and legends. To enhance her works through the cover, I printed her artwork on fabric texture paper, which can be displayed as an actual book. Adding strings as a bookmark portrays her works directly and the use of classism in type and the tone of the paper itself represents historical feelings of works.

In the e-book version of her book, I placed her work and text continuously scrolling down on one page to represent her work connected by string. I expressed menu icon and hover station as strings to portrays her works.

Outcome

The most challenging part was how I indicate her artworks through the cover because her works are already a book and have strong composition. Maintaining minimalist and simplicity with classism on the design clearly reflects the character of artist Maria Lai.
